The team X-Pest from Saint Andrew's Junior College, comprising Do Dieu Anh, Nguyen Nguyet Anh, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, did Singapore proud by clinching 2 out of 8 UN Millennium Goal Gold Medals of the SAGE World Cup 2011: UN Millenium Goal Gold Medal: Ensure Environmental Sustainability and UN Millenium Goal Gold Medal: To reduce Child Mortality. Emerging as one clear winner for these awards was no easy feat, considering that there is no longer any 1st, 2nd and 3rd award for the UN Millennium Goals. The keynote speaker even donated a token sum to encourage the team to carry the project forward.
The team helped low income farmers in Vietnam achieve a better standard of living through the use of an environmentally-friendly and certified pesticide, Metarhizium Anisopliae (a.k.a PESTAR). Often these farmers are exposed to toxic pesticides that not only harm their health and farmlands but also, end-consumers. Production of the pesticide is done through a collaboration with a prison, where convicts (mostly sole breadwinners) can now earn a basic level of income for their families as a result of the collaboration. |
